National Security Minister Dr. Horace Chang says the implementation of states of emergency in at-risk communities is a valuable short-term strategy to arrest the country’s growing crime problem. This follows calls from the Private Sector Organisation of Jamaica (PSOJ) for effective short-term crime fighting strategies . The PSOJ says political leaders need to reach consensus on these strategies. But Dr. Chang has said discussions are taking place with the parliamentary opposition on short-term measures. While the government is sure of what it would like, talks are also ongoing with legal experts as it tries “to ensure that whatever we do is appropriate legally”, he said. According to Dr. Chang, significant crime fighting steps cannot be taken “just by pure consensus” but must follow legal guidelines to avoid challenges in court. The National Security Minister was speaking Wednesday at a post Cabinet media briefing at Jamaica House.
