Avengers: Endgame will mark not only the final chapter in Marvel’s main superhero series, but also the end of a sweet, vital tradition. According to co-director Joe Russo, the film will feature a cameo by the late Stan Lee—and it might be the last Lee cameo of this particular nature.

“It’s his last one committed to film,” Russo told Mashable . As the outlet notes, Russo previously said Lee might have filmed a cameo for the upcoming Spider-Man: Far from Home before his death in 2018 , but now it appears that is not the case

Over the last few decades, Lee cameoed in every film in the Marvel Cinematic Universe franchise, as well as several films outside the MCU that were based on comics he co-created—like the first round of X-Men and Spider-Man films in the early aughts. His brief, winking performances became a beloved tradition and the ultimate homage to the comic book creator, who dreamt up many of Marvel’s most famous superheroes. It was previously reported that the studio had banked a handful of Lee cameos that could be slotted into future films, but, per Russo, Endgame will be the last in this line

Of course, there are other ways future MCU films can pay homage to Lee. The Oscar-winning film Spider-Man: Into the Spider-Verse featured an animated cameo, as did Big Hero 6 . Perhaps the powers that be at Marvel will find a creative, respectful way to keep the tradition alive, one way or another

In the Mashable interview, co-director Anthony Russo also weighed in about the Lee cameos, reminiscing about how thrilling it was to work with Lee over the past few years. “We have all these movie stars on that set, and when Stan came to set, everybody would be like kids again,” he said. “It was always a lot of fun shooting these cameos because he was very charming, and he would maybe get the crew going, and everybody would be laughing and having a good time.”
